Just in case you didn’t know, in addition to our standard book range, we also produce custom books in bespoke sizes, cover materials and packaging for publishers, artists, designers and corporates.
One of our favourites is Year Of The Monkey, a collaboration between illustrator Paul Garbett and Formist Editions, an indy publisher of books and collectibles for lovers of art founded by Mark Gowing.
After visiting the Momento Pro showroom, Mark surprised us by choosing lay-flat binding that is usually the product of choice for our wedding and portrait clients.
There was no need for concern as Mark gave it a creative twist, with a lemon linen cover featuring a two-colour foil emboss on the front and back, and black title embossing on the spine.
He also played around with the page prints. Rather than inkjet-printing on to cotton rag as is the norm for our Flush Mount Album product, we experimented with digital offset printing onto Mohawk Eggshell paper with a black board inserted between the pages for contrast. The results worked a treat, and gave the book its signature striped fore-edge.
Formist Editions‘ website states that, “Every Formist Edition is a thing to behold,” and we think this is true of Monkey. Every element and finish chosen complemented Paul’s bright and playful geometric graphics, and created the feel of a limited edition art book.
We weren’t the only ones who rated The Year of the Monkey as it was also awarded in the Mohawk Show 2017 and the NSW Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards 2018.
The edition was limited to 16 signed and numbered books that retail at $190. You can buy a copy at Formist Editions online store, or photo and art book fairs such as Volume Art Book Fair, that was hosted at Artspace, Wolloomooloo in October 2017.
