Photo book design tips from design experts

In this blog post we’ve collected design tips from local and international photo book creators, and some photo book design theory, to help you do your photographs justice. The focus is not on ‘commercially successful’ design but on design that is fit for the purpose of the book whether it be a personal photo project, a self published book, an artist book or other.

Great layout and page design is not intuitive, a fact that has been proven by thousands of books that have passed through Momento’s print facility. We see many good designs but many would also benefit from using a few design fundamentals.

While photographers are more visually literate than most, the ability to compose within the frame of a photograph doesn’t always translate to composition within the frame of a double page spread, but if you want to create the most effective photo book, good design is critical. Depending on the purpose and budget for your book you can choose to design it yourself, or seek assistance from a professional. In either case, the design should always be driven by the purpose and intention of your book.

A gift to the nation: Archival books honouring WW2 veterans

On 7 November 2018, Momento Pro and the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers proudly donated an archival inkjet printed book to the National Library of Australia, to commemorate the ‘Reflections Project – Honouring our WWII Veterans.’

On June 10 we hit a record of 10 staff being with us for 10 years – alongside our Managing Director, Geoff Hunt. That’s pretty special and we’re very lucky to have such loyal human beings working for us. We thought you might like to know a little about what they do and what makes them tick.

Leica Q limited edition by Jesse Marlow

Momento Pro was honoured to produce a custom book for Jesse Marlow and Leica, to package with the Leica Q limited edition camera launched in early 2018. Both of which are now sold out!

If you want a book that’s truly unique you can go off grid and produce a totally custom edition, with non-standard sizing, cover material, binding styles, paper and packaging. Be aware though that you have expensive taste, and we’ll need a tad more time to do some tests to ensure that the everything meets our high quality expectations!

Earlier this year we were honoured to produce a limited edition for photographer Jesse Marlow titled Anything Can Happen and Probably Will.  Jesse is an internationally awarded street photographer who has published numerous books including, Don’t Just Tell Them, Show Them, with Melbourne independent art book publisher M.33.
