Sarah J. Walker: Second Sight & Pelci Manor

If you’re contemplating entering the Australia & New Zealand photo book awards (or not), peruse this post about Melbourne-based Gen Z photographer Sarah J. Walker who can credit two photobook award wins for producing her first two publications.

Book awards have already played a significant role in the career of emerging Melbourne photographer Sarah J. Walker. In 2017 she won the Perimeter Small Book Prize. She went on to win the Photobook category of the Australia and New Zealand Photobook Award 2018 with Second Sight – the book published as a result of the Small Book Prize.

Homage to Harvey Benge (1944 – 2019)

Harvey Benge was well known in the anitpodean and European photo book community as prolific, oustpoken and entertaining. Following his passing this month we share his thoughts on book making, his bibliography and comments from his photo loving network.

One of the the antipodes most prolific and outspoken photo book creators, passed away last month, Harvey Benge.  In his own words, “I live and work between Auckland and Paris. My interest lies in the strange anthropology of cities, observing and making photographs of the unusual and overlooked in the human landscape where nothing is as it seems. I make photographic series which evolve into book works.”

Momento Pro wins ultimate international print award

The Premier Print Awards is the largest and most prestigious print competition on the global scene, and the Academy Awards of the graphic arts world. They are hosted by the Printing Industries of America, and in their 71st year the 2019 Awards attracted 2,238 entries from 13 countries. The judges awarded the top honour to Momento Pro. Find out why.

On 2 October in Chicago, Momento Pro was awarded the ultimate international print accolade – the Premier Print Awards James H. Mayes Jr. Memorial ‘Best of Show’ – for Middlehurst | Middle Earth, a fine art book we produced for Australian landscape photographer Peter Eastway.

Antipodean photo books acquired by Tate

A significant milestone in antipodean photo book history occurred in April, when a collection of 52 significant Australian and New Zealand photobooks were acquired by the Tate. The collection was curated by Dr Doug Spowart and Victoria Cooper, on the recommendation of photo book historian Martin Parr.

In April 2019, Australian photo book creators, academics and advocates, Dr Doug Spowart and Dr Victoria Cooper, completed a two year project to curate a selection of 52 significant Australian and New Zealand photo books for acquisition by the Tate, UK. The project was a labour of love and marks a significant milestone in antipodean photo book history.
