Now in its sixth year, the Australian Photographic Society’s (APS) annual Photo Book Awards 2021 attracted a total of 20 entries. While the number of submissions was down on last year (impacted by the extended lockdowns in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory) the quality of entries was once again very high. Congratulations to the six winners across the Storytelling and Portfolio categories, whose books are outlined below and offer plenty of food for thought for your next creation.

APS Photobook Competition winners 2020

Meet the winners of the 2020 Australian Photographic Society x Momento Pro Photobook competition. View their books and learn about the characteristics that made them successful.

Congratulations to the winners of Australia’s only national amateur photobook competition hosted by the Australian Photographic Society (APS) and Momento Pro. In its fifth edition, the competition attracted 37 entries across the Storytelling and Portfolio categories, from members of the APS and local camera clubs. The books were diverse in format and subject, and they featured a range of photographic genres including landscape, portrait, travel, nature, architecture, street and fine art nudes.

‘A Sun Dance In Sandringham’ by Solomon Mortimer

‘A Sundance in Sandringham’ is a photo book by New Zealand photographer, Solomon Mortimer, published in collaboration with PhotoForum in March 2019. The book was produced by print-on-demand company Momento Pro care of Mortimer winning the New Zealand Photobook of the Year Self Published Award 2015.

Momento Pro established the Australia and New Zealand Photobook of the Year Award, and its earlier incarnations, to help antipodean photo artists produce publications and progress their photographic career. We’re proud to have now helped bring 10 new photo book titles to life including, A Sundance in Sandringham by Solomon Mortimer. This title was published by Mortimer and PhotoForum in March 2019, and the story behind-the-book is outlined below.

‘ROYGBIV’ by ANZPA Student winner Kira Sampurno

The Australia and New Zealand Photobook Award Student Winner for 2018, Kira Sampurno, reveals details about the editing, sequencing and design process of ROYGBIV.

We feel it’s important to tell the story behind photo books as it gives insight into their purpose and process. It can also enlighten those creating their own photo book or looking to enter international photo book competitions.

Today we interview the Australia and New Zealand Photobook Award Student Winner for 2018, Kira Sampurno, about her playful publication, ROYGBIV, that presents a fresh perspective on the streetscape of downtown Wellington. Indonesian born, Sampurno, produced the book as part of a Bachelor of Design (Honours) at Massey University, New Zealand. Read on to learn how she put it together.
