Premium print promotions: Lumina Collective

The Australian ‘Lumina Collective’ created a series of saddle-stitched portfolios to distribute their images to agencies, editors, galleries and fans. Here they share the story of their collaboration and creation of photo book publications.

 

 

There should be no surprise that we at Momento Pro believe photographers can elevate their work in print. This philosophy inspired us to introduce a softcover book range that includes perfect bound books and saddle-stitched booklets. A group of talented Australian female photo artists, Lumina Collective, produced a series of booklets they could send to agencies, picture editors, galleries and fans, and below they share the story of their collaboration, and creation of various publications.

Photo book design tips from design experts

In this blog post we’ve collected design tips from local and international photo book creators, and some photo book design theory, to help you do your photographs justice. The focus is not on ‘commercially successful’ design but on design that is fit for the purpose of the book whether it be a personal photo project, a self published book, an artist book or other.

Great layout and page design is not intuitive, a fact that has been proven by thousands of books that have passed through Momento’s print facility. We see many good designs but many would also benefit from using a few design fundamentals.

While photographers are more visually literate than most, the ability to compose within the frame of a photograph doesn’t always translate to composition within the frame of a double page spread, but if you want to create the most effective photo book, good design is critical. Depending on the purpose and budget for your book you can choose to design it yourself, or seek assistance from a professional. In either case, the design should always be driven by the purpose and intention of your book.

#photobookjousting at Photobook NZ

The Photobook NZ Festival in March 2018 featured a debate about Instagram’s role in the future of photography publishing. We concluded that while the photo book is the superior format for encountering photographs, Instagram is an invaluable tool for photobook makers and self publishers to promote and sell their books.

This post was inspired by a debate I participated in at the second Photobook NZ Festival in Wellington. We concluded that while Instagram is not the future of photography publishing it is an invaluable tool for photobook makers and self publishers to promote and sell their books. I argued that the photo book is the more superior format for encountering and experiencing photographs due it’s physicality and long term accessibility, and my hot tip was that the hashtag #photobookjousting will get your New Zealand and Australian photo book seen by those that count.
