Every year the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) hosts the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA), which has included a Book category since 2005. Momento Pro has been a proud sponsor of the Book award since 2006 and we’ve had the good fortune of sitting in on the judging every year. Below is a visual history of the 13 winners to date, a showcase of the 2018 entrants and winner, and a link to the full judging video. Kudos to Peter Eastway for creating two of the five finalist books in the 2018 AIPP Australian Professional Photography Book Award, but it was his inkjet printed limited edition, Middlehurst | Middle Earth that earned a Gold Distinction and the crown. The judge’s felt it was “an absolute standout … a work of art … a real masterpiece.” We agree that it was the complete package, with exceptional photography, a simple sophisticated design and production values that did the photographs justice. Read on to learn more about what the judges thought, and how to put together an award-winning photo book from the master himself.
If you want a book that’s truly unique you can go off grid and produce a totally custom edition, with non-standard sizing, cover material, binding styles, paper and packaging. Be aware though that you have expensive taste, and we’ll need a tad more time to do some tests to ensure that the everything meets our high quality expectations!
Earlier this year we were honoured to produce a limited edition for photographer Jesse Marlow titled Anything Can Happen and Probably Will. Jesse is an internationally awarded street photographer who has published numerous books including, Don’t Just Tell Them, Show Them, with Melbourne independent art book publisher M.33.
Just in case you didn’t know, in addition to our standard book range, we also produce custom books in bespoke sizes, cover materials and packaging for publishers, artists, designers and corporates.
One of our favourites is Year Of The Monkey, a collaboration between illustrator Paul Garbett and Formist Editions, an indy publisher of books and collectibles for lovers of art founded by Mark Gowing.
