Photo book design tips from design experts

In this blog post we’ve collected design tips from local and international photo book creators, and some photo book design theory, to help you do your photographs justice. The focus is not on ‘commercially successful’ design but on design that is fit for the purpose of the book whether it be a personal photo project, a self published book, an artist book or other.

Great layout and page design is not intuitive, a fact that has been proven by thousands of books that have passed through Momento’s print facility. We see many good designs but many would also benefit from using a few design fundamentals.

While photographers are more visually literate than most, the ability to compose within the frame of a photograph doesn’t always translate to composition within the frame of a double page spread, but if you want to create the most effective photo book, good design is critical. Depending on the purpose and budget for your book you can choose to design it yourself, or seek assistance from a professional. In either case, the design should always be driven by the purpose and intention of your book.

‘Interview With A Cockatoo (Or Two)’ by Leila Jeffreys

When publishers didn’t take up the offer to produce her bird book, Australian fine-art photographer Leila Jeffreys decided to go it alone and self publish with Momento Pro. She felt that a photo book was an affordable format for her fans that didn’t diminish the value of her fine art prints.

 

Leila Jeffreys is one of a few Australian photographers who is equally adored by fine art collectors as she is by creatives, stylists and the general public. Her striking bird portrait series have universal appeal, and we were delighted to help her produce her first photo book, Interview With A Cockatoo (Or Two). Self publishing + crowdfunding a photo book

Self publishing and crowdfunding is now the most viable way to realise a photo book, and our review of 33 ANZ photo book crowdfunding campaigns suggests you can attract $20,000 if you set your campaign up right. Read on to explore the options and benefits.

Over the last decade traditional book publishers have avoided photographic books because they’re considered a risky return on investment, so unless you can win over an indy publisher, secure a grant, or you’ve got some personal savings, self publishing and crowdfunding is now the most viable solution for realising a photo book project. The good news is that art projects are the most-funded, and our analysis of thirty three Australian and New Zealand photo book crowdfunding campaigns revealed an average of $18,500 in pledges per campaign.
